Lights! Camera! Purposeful Action!
How do you get results? Action.
How do you get the results you actually wanted? Purposeful Action.
There's a reason the director shouts, "Lights! Camera......." and does not stop there. And there is an implied "action" that will be tied to the script or plan. She does not want just any action. She wants specific purposeful action set in motion from the script.
Wild ideation combined with careful planning pour into the script. Not every idea saw the light of day and not every item carefully planned and documented was carried through. There are great moments in a major motion pictures because of improv--random ideas that come out of talented actors.
Who doesn't remember the famous "When Harry Met Sally" restaurant scene where a woman observer comments, "I'll have what she is having." Her comment was improvised and it elevated the scene. But imagine trying to make an entire movie with unplanned improvised moments like this: no script to guide decisions, no clear ending, and no carefully planted plot twists. It's hard to imagine that a great movie could result without a great deal of luck running a production this way.
Action is a good thing, but purposeful planned action guiding your decisions dramatically increases the odds of success. The more specific your plans and thoughts, the more powerful those actions become. The core of your business plan is essentially an action list.
Don't just stand still and wait for something to happen. If your ship doesn't come in, swim to it (my favorite quote). Write your business plan, shine a light to it, add background music, and cue drum roll....hmmm, the plan does nothing unless the business owner applies action. Write your business script, and yell "Action!" You, your team and the universe can activate a business epic.
